Visit Wasaga Beach for the Sunsets and the Sand (2021 Update)
Wasaga Beach, about two hours north of Toronto has long been known for its 14 km of sandy beaches and spectacular sunsets.
The good news—the beach is back! The water levels are back down, closer to normal, so you can enjoy the full length of the beach.
How to Get the Most from Your Wasaga Beach Visit
If you have memories of Wasaga Beach from years ago, you’re probably thinking of “the main drag”, also known as 1st Street with its amusement arcades, snack bars, and little clothing shops.
Most of that is gone due to fires years ago.
There’s parking down by Beach Areas 1 and 2.
But I recommend that you drive along Mosley Avenue and find Beach Areas 3, 4, 5 and 6. You’ll notice that all streets off Mosley are numbered. However, entrances to parking lots are not that obvious. So here they are…
Where to Find the Beach Parking Lots
The entrance to parking at Beach Area 3 is at 21st Street.
Beach Area 4 is at 24th Street. Turn onto 24th Street then watch for the sign that takes you onto 26th Street to the park entrance. (Both 25th and 26th come off of 24th Street. Neither go up to Mosley, so it’s a bit confusing.)
You can get to Beach Area 5 by taking 35th, 36th Street or Sunnydale Road. All lead to the same entrance.
Beach Area 6 is at 50th Street. 50th Street ends at Pinecrest Avenue. Make a left on Pinecrest and then a quick right to stay on 50th to reach the park entrance off of Shore Lane.
Best Beach Areas and Dog Beach
Dogs are not allowed anywhere on the beach, except for the Dog Beach. That is a marked-off section at Beach Area 3. Beach 3 is also one of the best beach areas overall with many places to set up chairs right on the beach.
The other area with the most beach is Beach Area 6. This is often the quietest beach because it’s not that obvious to get to.
Beach Area 6 is also where you can watch the windsurfers who tend to show up late August and September when winds and waves are higher.
Bring Your Own Food – There’s None on the Beach
Because Wasaga Beach is a provincial park, there is no food for sale within the park. (I think food trucks in the parking lots would be a great idea, but the park people don’t seem to agree.)
So, make sure you either bring a picnic from home or shop at the beach before you go into the park. You’ll find lots of restaurants around Mosley and 28th Street including pizza, fish & chips, Thai, McD’s, Tim Horton’s and more.
Or head to Mosley and 45th Street where there’s a SuperStore grocery, Starbucks, drug store, LCBO, and a few other restaurants.
All beach areas have washrooms and picnic tables.
Free Parking at Wasaga Beach Monday—Thursday
Normally, parking in the lots at the beach areas is $17 per day during the week and $20 on weekends. But this year, due to Covid-19, the province has made parking free in all provincial parks from Monday to Thursday. This is really the only parking available – there is no legal parking on the side streets or laneways.
You might find cheaper parking during the week along Mosley near Beach Area 2. Some of the motels will have signs offering $5 or $10 parking, but it’s a bit of a longer walk to the beach.
Don’t Make This Mistake Photographing Sunsets at Wasaga Beach
If you like photographing sunsets, and who doesn’t, Wasaga is the perfect place. The sun will set in the water just to the right of Collingwood and the Blue Mountains.
I see many people taking sunset pictures, mostly with their phones but also with larger professional cameras.
Often, I see them making the same mistake. They shoot the sun, and as soon as it goes down, they turn around and leave. Sure, if you want to sun in your image, take those shots.
But in many cases, the most dramatic skies come in the 30 minutes after the sun sets. While the sun is beyond the horizon, it beams up into the sky and clouds which are then reflected in the water. That’s when you get the golden orange tones, the dramatic cloud shapes and silhouettes of people, trees, and picnic tables. The image at the top of this post was taken about 15 minutes after sunset.
Even when it’s mostly dark, you’ll often get sublime red orange tones in the sky. So plan to stay a bit later to get the shots that others miss.
