5 Best Places For Camping In Slovenia
Special Note: Readers of Earthtrippers may have noticed that we have no posts on camping, nor any posts on Slovenia. We’ve had great RV trips in the past, but not so much tenting. And Slovenia – it’s on our list.
However, when Tadej Kožar, an experienced camper from Slovenia asked whether we’d be interested in a guest post, we thought why not? Camping is the perfect way to see a country’s true beauty.
Tadej is also an expert on tents and reviews many of them on his camping tent site. So, if you’re looking for a tent, this is the place. Over to Tadej with the 5 best places for camping in Slovenia…
Slovenia: A Great Choice for Camping and Active Holidays
Slovenia has it all: mountains, lakes, the ocean, caves, beautiful forests and many spas. But this time we’ll focus on an outdoor activity that people love throughout whole year and that is camping.
Why do we camp? Going camping brings us closer to nature, gives us a real change from our everyday lives and helps us relax. Pitching a tent with your loved ones, exploring, watching the animals and cooking a meal on a campfire are for me the most pleasurable activities you can do.
Slovenia has many beautiful forests, lakes and rivers where you can camp alone or with your family and friends. Every region has its own sites that you can discover when camping. Here are some of my favorite places for camping in Slovenia that people love and return to year after year.
Auto Camp Šmica
The Šmica campsite can be found on a partially grassy and woodland surface on the bank of the Savinja River and not far from the beautiful Logarska Dolina (Logar Valley) at an altitude of more than 500 meters. It’s the ideal starting point for mountaineering and water sports.
At the site, you can rent a tent, a trailer as well as a bungalow. Kayaks and rafts are also available for organizing guided tours along the Savinja, where you can also swim or fish.
I suggest that you visit the river’s source, the Rinka Waterfall in the Logarska Dolina. It’s a natural pearl where you can go hiking, mountaineering, rafting, kayaking and cycling (rental bicycles are available at the camp). You can also hike to many natural sights such as the Robanov kot and Matkov kot valleys and the Snežna Jama cave.
Camping Terme Banovci
Terme Banovci lies in the northeastern part of Slovenia, not far from the Maribor – Ljutomer road. There are 130 camping sites in the classic camp and 50 in the naturist campsite. Sončni Gaj is the first naturist camp in Europe built around thermal waters. You can swim in three outdoor thermal pools (34 – 38 degrees), in a swimming pool with plain water, a pool with a slide and a children’s pool.
The Ministry of Health proclaimed Banovci thermal water as a natural healing agent in 1995, and many come here to take the waters as part of a restorative process.
At the camp you can rent a bike, play tennis, table tennis and volleyball.
The Banovci region is famous not only for its mineral waters, but also for top-quality wine, cheese and beautiful pottery.
Camp Liza
Among the high peaks and green mountains lies the Bovec basin, where you will find the emerald river Soča. You can also see the river Koritnica that flows into the river Soča, just 200 meters from Camp Liza. This camp, located in one of the most beautiful corners of Slovenia, is a second home for many guests who return year after year.
If you go above the Koritnica, you can find a secluded campsite among the greenery and trees where you can spend a peaceful time communing with nature.
Camp Jezero
Camp Jezero is one of Slovnia’s smaller campsites with eight sites for motorhomes and trailers, 11 tent sites and five wooden glamping houses that each accommodate up to four people. These houses are shaped like the former simple forest huts of workers in the Kočevje forest.
Camping NaturPlatz
Camping NaturPlatz also named as “On the Škala” is one of those special places where you and your family and friends will spend hours around the campfire.
The special feature of Camping NaturPlatz is the ‘kočura’, a wooden hut in which you find a tent, equipped with a mattress, pillows and bed sheets. You can put up your own tent as well, or even borrow a sleeping bag if you want to spend the night gazing at the stars or sleeping in a hammock among the treetops.
The camp also features a shared kitchen and a common dining room.
The helpful staff will be happy to advise you on various excursions or organize guided activities such as canyoning, kayaking, rafting, hiking, climbing, mountain biking or caving. They also organize various artistic and theme workshops for children.
Which Campsite Should You Visit?
These are just five of the campsites in Slovenia that you can visit and spend a relaxing vacation. Each of these camps offers different activities and possibilities for campers.
The choice of campsite depends on your personal requirements, and I am sure that one of these camps will be a perfect place to spend some quality time outdoors.
Welcome to explore the green Slovenia!
What the Slovenia Tourist Board says…
If you hadn’t thought of visiting or camping in Slovenia, perhaps a trip to the Slovenia tourist board site will enlighten you. See what you’ve been missing…
Slovenia is the first country in the world to be declared a green destination based on the Green Destinations Criteria. Situated in the heart of Europe, Slovenia is a boutique country between the Alps, Mediterranean Sea, mysterious Karst with more than 11,000 karst caves and Pannonian Plain, rich in healthy water springs.
We are also proud that our capital Ljubljana was awarded the European Green Capital 2016 title. Welcome to Slovenia, the only country with the word LOVE in its name!
And that’s why you should go camping in Slovenia.

Its worth going to Slovenia just to look at the weird place-names on the road-signs.
NaturPlatz is looking beautiful, what would be the best time to visit NaturPlatz when fewer people around and also the weather would be good?

They’re open from the end of April to first of October. You’ll have to check weather forecasts for best times, and of course check the site for availability.
Huh? I’ve never thought about Slovenia as a place to visit OR camp in. Thanks for changing my mind!

Terme Banovci seems a nice place for camping… will go soon
Wild camping, or free camping, is officially prohibited in Slovenia. That doesn’t mean nobody does it, but it does come with a certain risk. Camping is regulated by municipality legislation.
